Learning objectives and goals
The objective of the workshop is to inspect the sound of the project, through the materials, shapes and actions. The project will start by the sound and the acoustic aspects of the object. The process will edge towards the realization of a pure musical instrument or towards a piece of furniture with a high acoustic quality, or even towards a hybrid mix of the two. A table which plays like an instrument, or perhaps a drum to sit on?
Concept
We are vibration, the vibration produces sounds.
We live in the primacy of sight (as revealed already by Aristotle), for this reason we often don’t realise the large influence that sound holds over the quality of our daily lives.
A space with bad acoustics disturbs us, an object with an aspect or function that doesn’t correspond to its sound seems immediately strange to us, something that we distance ourselves from.
In all the properties and characteristics of metal, its sound is undoubtedly one of the most interesting, yet less examined. We all know the topic and conserve an old memory composed from the sound of bells or from that time when we “rang” a railing, walking by its side with our finger sounding out the bars as if they were strings of a giant harp. Or even with the house keys amongst themselves or perhaps against a ceramic vase.
